1987

Research Corporation Technologies created as a separate entity.

In 1987, Research Corporation spun off its technology development and commercialization activities to create Research Corporation Technologies (RCT). The new company absorbed many of the foundation’s scientists, engineers, lawyers and marketing experts, assumed its patent holdings and took over its agreements with over 300 universities to evaluate, patent and commercialize their inventions.

Research Corporation Technologies was established in order to “identify, protect and develop potentially valuable academic inventions.” At its inception, RCT’s charges were to invest in applied research and development, and to back business startups and joint ventures. RCT assumed Research Corporation’s patent portfolio and investment administration agreements. Working capital was provided by a program-related investment by Research Corporation. Today, Research Corporation and Research Corporation Technologies are totally separate entities.
