RCSA responded quickly to create three emergency initiatives in response to the COVID-19 pandemic: the COVID-19 Initiative, Cottrell Fellowships, and Cottrell Instrumentation Supplements. The COVID-19 Initiative supported cutting-edge research into the detection and mitigation of the current and future epidemics. Cottrell Fellowships supported the work of postdoctoral fellows whose plans to start independent academic or research careers were delayed or derailed due to pandemic-related institutional hiring freezes. Cottrell Instrumentation Supplements supported new instrumentation (or updates to existing equipment) needed to continue research and learning at institutions struggling with the financial impact of the pandemic.
